The Objective
What Did I Do?

While working at SFU Public Square, one of the main projects I was collaborating with the design lead on were various speaker series, social media campaigns designed to spotlight presenters and panelists at upcoming SFU Public Square events. The speaker series served as a way to advertise the upcoming event and showcase the important work the individuals highlighted were working on. I used Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign to create graphics that would be posted to SFU Public Square's LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter pages.

Challenges
How Did I Do It?

The main challenge when developing the speaker series was balancing the events design elements with information about the spotlighted individuals. This especially surfaced when developing the Shadbolt Fellows and Juggling Mother: Undone in the Age of COVID-19 speaker series, as the speaker series designs SFU Public Square had used prior would not fit the design currently established for these events. To solve this, I sketched basic mockups of new designs that would then be finalized in Adobe Illustrator and Indesign. With feedback from my supervisor, I was able to finalize the final design and had them approved for posting.

The last speaker series I developed Taking It To The Streets. It also has a polaroid style layout with the speaker in the center.

Reflection

Developing speaker series was one of my favourite projects at SFU Public Square. It challenged me design wise differently that other projects have, and it was satisfying seeing the outcome of my work being posted for SFU Public Square's audience to see and engage with. I feel much more confident tackling graphic design problems head on!

COMPANY: SFU PUBLIC SQUARE

My first co-op work term was at SFU Public Square, a SFU department specializing in event planning for workshops, discussions and other gatherings focused on inclusivity, advocacy and action. As the department aims to highlight crucial issues in our community, it was important as a design assistant that I showcase upcoming the events and discussion panels in a respectful and engaging manner.
